Come join master harmonica teachers Shane Sager, Annie Raines and Ronnie Shellist along with country blues master Paul Rishell, Gabe Stillman and others for NEHI+RGB - the New England Harmonica Intensive plus Roots of Blues Guitar for a fully catered weekend of classes, interactive workshops, jams, concerts, and delicious food from favorite local eateries. It will start in Downtown Boston and end up at the Porch Southern BBQ in Medford, MA. This is a chance to learn new techniques, expand your repertoire and connect with people in the harmonica and blues communities. We hope you will join us for this very special event.
There will be some time spent on guitar-harmonica ensemble playing, so the weekend will be a chance to up your duo game. If you play both harmonica and fingerstyle acoustic guitar, you can learn on both instruments during the weekend for no extra charge.
NEHI+RBG 2023 features 10+ hours of multiple class offerings, covering playing and soloing techniques, repertoire, blues history, and performance skills. Small group classes alternating with panel discussions will give you a chance to hone techniques and explore broader concepts. You will also have a chance to perform solo or in front of a band at the student open mic & jam.
SKILL LEVELS: There will be classes from intermediate through advanced. Most beyond beginner harp players have at least some working knowledge of bending notes and can play clean single notes. Guitar students should have some experience with fingerstyle techniques. If you are a beginner harmonica player, contact us to see about getting some lessons from Shane to get caught up on techniques you will need to get the most out of the classes. If you’re not sure of your skill level, feel free to ask us!
WHAT’S INCLUDED: The Full weekend registration fee ($325 for harmonica or guitarists) covers all classes & lessons, meals, and concerts/jams from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.
A single-day pass ($275) covers all Saturday classes, catered lunch, plus dinner and the show at the Porch featuring Shane Sager and band. All classes will be recorded; videos and class materials will be available to all attendees post-weekend. More information including addresses and directions will be sent to you on registration.
ROOTS OF BLUES GUITAR:Saturday guitar classes will focus on Country Blues, music history, and fingerstyle guitar techniques. Bring an acoustic or resonator guitar, a capo, any thumbpicks or fingerpicks you use, and a slide if you have one. The weekend will include presentations, classes, and conversations with Paul Rishell, Gabe Stillman (Sunday only), and Ira Klein. There will be an opportunity to perform on solo/duo acoustic and/or electric guitar with backing at the Sunday morning recital. More information will be added soon!
CANCELLATION POLICY / COVID GUIDELINES:Registration can be cancelled for a full refund up to Noon Eastern Time on Wednesday, November 8. If you need to cancel within 48 hours, you will receive a 50% refund and still have access to all class videos and materials. If you are feeling at all under the weather or have recently been exposed to a contagious virus, please consider the health of the other attendees, the faculty, and their families, and stay home! You will still get copies of tabs and links to all of the class videos. Thank you!
NO PETS As this year’s workshop will be hosted in indoor settings, we will not be able to accommodate pets.
ACCOMMODATIONS/TRANSPORTATION Accommodations are not included in the workshop fee. The weekend’s events will be taking place in downtown Boston near Beacon Hill and in East Medford and accessible by car and public transportation. Directions and parking information will be sent to you after you register.
