Helen Hunt is Our Booking Agent

Day 10 - Ft. Lauderdale, FL - 10:23 AM
You remember the old bar joke: "A woman named Helen Hunt has found a pocketbook, so if you've lost your pocketbook, go to Helen Hunt for it."
If musicians want to go on tour and they don't already have a booking agent, they can go to Helen Hunt for some gigs. This is also known as "touring in Florida." Florida, the southeasternmost U.S. state, was founded in 1955 by Sam Walton as a prototype for his future semi-eponymous chain of department stores. Its name was taken from an ancient Seminole Indian word meaning "long-ass state." Battered by hurricanes and hot sun, it hangs limply over the Gulf of Mexico, occasionally calling out to its neighboring states, "I'm OK, I just need to rest a minute." After 5 days in Florida, we feel the same way.

...We started out by driving 330 miles from Atlanta to Gainesville, just to gain some ground on our trip southward. This is known in musician-language as a "day off." We ate at a local Japanese Steakhouse that featured a juggling chef who dropped more than he caught. The food was freshly prepared yet unbelievably bad. How can you mess up fried rice? The next day, somewhat weakened by our compromised digestion, we packed up for another day off and a 300-mile drive to Fort Lauderdale.
Next: High drama, low expectations on Florida's Turnpike

Hey! Our state does not hang "limply". In fact,if you really look at the map, you'll see it is quite robust and substantial. In fact, if it weren't the imposing nature of this fair penninsula Castro would have attacked the good ole U.S. long ago. A little appreciation please. And don't forget, it's not the size of your state, but how you drive through it that matters. Or something like that.

Welcome to the Plywood State, where the "Orange Blossom Special" was born on the banks of Lake Okeechobee many years ago. It is as difficult to find good pizza on the peninsula as it is to find a good Japanese Steakhouse. Hope you both have recovered from Gainesville as I'm looking forward to your show tonight at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth, where it is always South Florida blues at it's best.
